Biography

Samuel was born between 1765 and 1772. He was the son of James Van Winkle. He married in Washington Co., Virginia to Nelly Jackson, but the date wasn’t recorded. He passed away after 1 Jun 1811.

The marriage date given in the citation is actually for the previous record. They were married by Nicholas Reagan, who didn’t give the dates for dozens of other marriages.

In Virginia Colonial Abstracts. Vol. XXXIV, Washington County Marriage Register 1782 - 1820, Abstracted by Beverley Fleet, there is a note stating that many of the undated marriages by Rev. Reagan are estimated to have occurred in 1790 - 1791.

Samuel Winklevan has 1 White males above 21 and 1 Horses, mares etc. This is the first time I’ve ever seen Van Winkle spelled this way.

Saml. Vanwinkle has 2 white males under 10, 1 white male 26 thru 44, 3 white females under 10, 2 white females 10 thru 15 and 1 white female 16 thru 25. The record also shows that there were 9 enslaved persons, but this seems to be an error since up until this time Samuel has barely been able to afford a horse or two. Perhaps, this should be on the line above or below Samuel.
